From our ACTION Nurses! Special day on May 30th.
Dear Parents of Connaught Elementary School,
We, the new ACTION Nurses, invite you to our first ever historical archeological day hosted at Connaught Elementary School on May 30th, 2017! We have partnered with the Saskatchewan Archaeological Society to create a day full of learning and different interactive activities! We invite you to please come out, support your child in their learning, and make this day memorable for everyone! We will also provide parents who attend with free coffee and muffins! The school can provide parents with transportation to the event if needed – all you need to do is give us a call!
The following is an excerpt from the Saskatchewan Archeology Society on the activities taking place on May 30th, 2017.
The Saskatchewan Archaeological Society is pleased to bring hands-on activities to Connaught Elementary School on May 30! We will start each session with a brief introduction to what archaeology is, what archaeologists do, and how long people have lived in Saskatchewan. Following this, the children will be divided into smaller groups; some will make their own rock art (this may be on "bison hide" kraft paper instead unless the kids want to bring their own smaller flat rocks), others will make pottery (two different types of pots) and a third group will hunt bison using a spear and atlatl. Our final group activity will be playing the Fur Trading Game. The children will be divided into four groups, each with their own set of trading cards and a checklist. They will work with the other groups to acquire all the items on their checklist, and the team that completes their list first is deemed the winner. There should be sufficient time to play two or more rounds of the game. We will bring a few other activities
The Society is participating in the Great Canadian Giving Challenge, an online donation program that runs from June 1-30. We are raising money to be able to give each of the 840+ Saskatchewan schools one copy of the Fur Trading Game. With every dollar donated to our campaign, we earn one entry to win $10,000. The production cost of each game is estimated at $40, so we really welcome any support that can help us reach our goal. In order to show the uniqueness of the game, we would like to create a few brief videos of the game in action to be posted on our campaign page. (I will be bringing some information cards for distribution 😊).
The Saskatchewan Archeological Society will be photographing/videotaping the event. These images may be used in promotional literature or on their social media page. If you do not wish for your picture to be used, please let us know.
Each class has been assigned a specific time to partake in the activities. You are welcome to attend all sessions or accompany your child at their assigned time.
