The Unity Public School grade six students have spent several months preparing Junior Genius projects. On Wednesday, April 14th the gym turned into a kaleidoscope of projects that ranged from dog sledding to R.C.M.P. dog training, honey bees to ants to mosquitoes, drum making to drawing, Ancient Egypt to the Dubai Towers, the Bird's Nest Stadium to the New Dallas Stadium to the Great Wall of China, Ancient Greek Myths to the Canada Line, hockey helmets to motor cross, and hummingbirds to curling.
The students did research and interviewed an expert on his/her topic and then took that information and used it in several ways. Each student prepared a display that included a model and a binder showing how they constructed the model. Many displays also had other equipment for their topic, such as motor cross bikes, a dogsled, and artwork. They also put together a PowerPoint and/or a PhotoStory presentation and gave the school laptops a workout.
Despite a snowy morning many invited guests, community members, and the kindergarten to grade five students and their teachers visited the gym and learned about the wide variety of topics. The grade six students were knowledgeable and explained their projects and answered questions from 9:30 am to 12:00. They even provided snacks for their visitors. It was a wonderful celebration of learning.
