This past school year, I was fortunate to attend two Digital Citizenship Continuum presentations by Donna DesRoches, the Living Sky School Division Learning Resources Consultant. The first seminar was one of many held that evening for School Community Council. The Digital Citizenship Continuum presentation was based on an informative handout put together by a committee. It was designed for both parents and teachers and is divided into different grade levels. The handout goes through safety, communication, education, access, and the responsible use of information on the internet. The seminar explained to parents and educators that their role is to ensure the safety of children using the Internet and its proper use while allowing them to explore all the incredible information that is available to them at their finger tips. The Bready School Community Council felt that Digital Citizenship was an important issue for our parents and organized a more personal seminar held in the library at Bready School. Ms. DesRoches presented the same information along with the handout. Because the seminar was in a more personal setting, we were able to have a small group discussion to help answer some of our concerns as parents and to explain what scares us about the internet. We then able to continued our seminar in the computer lab and had a hands-on demonstration on the best ways to monitor your computer at home. We also took time to talk about Facebook which has become a very popular site for both young and old. Ms. DesRoches explained that when the Facebook site is used correctly, it can be a very positive tool for parents and children to communicate and keep in touch. It was very helpful to learn how and when to use privacy settings. The Digital Citizenship Continuum seminar was designed for both the beginner and the advanced computer user. It was very helpful to inform parents and teacher about their responsibilities to keep the internet a fun, informative, and safe place for our children. Story submitted by parent Lynn Greening
