Janice Christensen, a teacher at BCS brought up the idea of partnering with the local Rotary club. The idea took off with the students of the Student Leadership team initiating the project. They were instrumental in getting the school community involved and chose to raise money through a coin drive collecting toonies, loonies and loose change.
They raised a total of $2000 in a two week period. Teacher Barb Lilly and Principal Glen Leask worked actively with the student leadership team to ensure the project was realized. The Rotary Club of the Battlefords was pleased to partner with the school.
The $2000 collected by the students was then matched by the local Rotary Club of the Battlefords, then by Rotary District Foundation and the Government of Canada. The $2000 raised by the students of BCS has become $8000 through matching donations.
The $8000 will go towards shelter for the people of Haiti. The Shelter Box program provides a tent, sleeping bags, light and heat, cooking utensils, drinking water, and tools. For every $1000 collected Box is able to provide a tent and shelter for a family of 10 for up to 6 months. The students at BCS and the Rotary Club were able to assist 80 people with their donation.
BCS is Living Sky School Divisions largest elementary school which is located in the Town of Battleford. Over 500 students attend the school from surrounding rural areas and the Town of Battleford. The Rotary Club of the Battlefords is active in many community and international projects.
