A-Z

Academic Year - the portion of the school year commencing on the first day of school and ending on the last day of the school year.

Accountability - the act of being responsible for assigned responsibilities. This includes, but is not limited to the use of funds, results achieved, planned for continuous improvement and achieving desired results..

Administrative Council - the council includes Principals, Vice-Principals, and Senior Administration.

Annual Report - the Board of Education is required to report on the activities of the Board of Education and school division once a year. The report is delivered at the Public Annual Meeting.

Assessment as Learning - focuses on the role of the student as the critical connector between assessment and learning. When students are active, engaged and critical assessors, they make sense of information, relate it to prior knowledge and use it for new learning.

Assessment for Learning - is formative in nature and is designed to give teachers information to modify and differentiate teaching and learning activities. In current literature, this term can also include "Assessment as Learning". This means that the concept of student engagement is incorporated into the modification and differentiation of the teaching/learning process is designed to give teachers information to modify and differentiate teaching and learning activities

Assessment of Learning - is summative in nature and is used to confirm what students know and can do, and to demonstrate whether they have achieved the curriculum outcomes, and to show how they are placed in relation to others.

Blueprint- is a framework of life and work competencies for Canadians of all ages who need to prosper in today's labor markets, and in contemporary society. The Blueprint is also a guideline to help strengthen career and employment development and transition programs in any setting where youth and adults are being helped to connect with their future.

Board of Education- consists of 10 members who are elected from rural and urban subdivisions. They are elected for a three year term. The Board of Education meets twice a month.

Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) - is a union that serves Support staff in Living Sky School Division. Employment of Support staff follows the guidelines negotiated in the CUPE agreement.

Canadian Union of Public Employees(CUPE) Agreement - the agreement is negotiated by Support staff, Board of Education and Administration. Employment of Support staff follows the guidelines negotiated in the CUPE agreement.

Central Office - administrative and support staff who provide necessary supports to schools by departments.

Continuous Improvement Framework (CIF) - is a common strategic planning mechanism for the Ministry of Education, Boards of Education and School Community Councils for Pre-K -12. Priorities include: higher levels of literacy and achievement, equitable opportunities for all students, smooth transitions into and through the system and strong system-wide accountability and governance.

Curriculum - guidelines outlined by the Ministry for each subject in specific grades from K-12.

Data - information collected through a systematic method (quantitatively and qualitatively) which is used as evidence for tracking purposes.

Early Childhood Education - includes children from the ages of 3-5 years of age who receive supports through the education system.

Education Act (1995) - the Education Act is provincial legislation that provides guidelines to the Ministry, Boards and Schools to follow in the regulation and operation of K-12 education.

Educational Assistant - provides educational support to students in classrooms under the supervision of a teacher or principal.

English as another Language (EAL) - a program that provides English language training to students who have not had English as their first language.

Freedom of Information Act - the act is cited as the freedom of information and protection of privacy regulations for Saskatchewan citizens.

Home-Based Education - follows regulations under the Education Act. Parents who choose home-based education ensure that the program is consistent with goals of Saskatchewan education and that it is age appropriate.

KidsFirst - is a voluntary program that helps families. The program enhances knowledge, provides support and builds on family strengths.

Kwik Tag- moves paper files into electronic documents using photocopiers.

League of Educational Administrators, Directors and Superintendents (LEADS) - the league membership consists of Administrators, Directors and Superintendents who are employed by Saskatchewan school divisions.

Local Implementation and Negotiation Committee Agreement (LINC) - the agreement is negotiated by members of the teaching community, Board of Education and administration.

Ministry of Education - is a provincial ministry that oversees the Education Act and ensures the education of K-12 students

Municipal Employees Pension Plan (MEPP) - the pension plan all support staff contribute to.

Navision - fully integrated Human Resources, Payroll and Financial software solutions for education sectors.

Partnership Agreements - different associations and organizations who engage in agreements with the school division for the purpose of enhancing student learning.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) - is a systems approach to preventing and responding to school, classroom, and student discipline issues.

Pre-Kindergarten - is a program designed for student's age 3 and 4 who require additional learning supports.

Principal - administrative leader of individual schools.

Principal's September Statistical Report (PSSR) - enrollment data which is collected by individual schools on September 30th of each school year. It is the official enrollment data used for the school year for various purposes.

Professional Learning Community (PLC) - teachers working in collaboration to review student results with the purpose of enhancing classroom practices to improve all students' learning.

Pupil Teacher Ratio (PTR) - is the ratio used by boards of education and administration that indicates the number of pupils per teacher in classrooms.

Qualitative Data - information in descriptive terms not numerical used to develop trends and relationships among variables.

Quantitative Data - information in numerical terms used to describe trends and relationships among variables.

Record of Employment (ROE) - statement of earnings sent to Service Canada. This document is used for employees who are collecting employment insurance.

Rubric - a tool that is used for assessment purposes.

Saskatchewan Association School Board Officials (SASBO) - includes all business employees of school boards.

Saskatchewan Educational Leadership Unit (SELU) - provides professional development to administration and schools. Located at the University of Saskatchewan, College of Education.

Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association (SHSAA) - provides support to schools who engage in a high school athletics.

Saskatchewan Professional Development Unit (SPDU) - the purpose of SPDU is to enhance effective in-service for the members of the teaching profession of Saskatchewan and other national partners and to provide support for the educational community's pursuit of the same.

Saskatchewan School Boards Association (SSBA) - is an association of membership that consists of school boards across Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan Teacher Federation (STF) - the federation serves teachers across the province in areas of advocacy, support, and professional development.

School - a body of students that is organized as a unit for educational purposes under the jurisdiction of the board of education. It is comprised of one or more instructional groups or classes with a principal and teaching staff and other support staff assigned to the students.

School Community Councils (SCC) - include parents, community members, school staff and students who are engaged in local initiatives that impact student learning and success.

School Day - the day within a school year in which instruction is given.

School Wide Information System (SWIS) - a web based application that helps schools store, manage and analyze data about student behavior generated by office referrals.

School Year - the period commencing from July 1 of any given calendar year and ending on June 30 in the next calendar year.

Secretary - provides administrative support to Principal and school staff.

Student Data System (SDS) - confidential student data which is submitted to the Ministry of Education for the purposes of tracking students in Saskatchewan.

Substitute Teacher - is a teacher employed on a day to day basis as required to replace a teacher who is temporarily absent from regular duties.

Teacher - instructional leader in the classroom.

Trustee - member of the Board of Education.

Versatran - a computer program that maps out all bus routes across the school division.

Web Portals - a website that allows all staff to view transfer and edit information relevant to them. It enables Human Resources, Payroll and Schools to transfer data electronically.

Workplace Partnership Agreement (FNMR and Living Sky School Division) agreement- a recent agreement signed by the Board of Education and First Nations Metis Relations with the goal of achieving a representative workforce within Living Sky School Division.
